HSI hosted a ribbon cutting to celebrate the completion of a $1.25 million renovation to the first floor of its headquarters, the Larry T. Byrd Administrative Building. This significant upgrade enhances HSI’s ability to serve Chicagoans in need of comprehensive behavioral health and human services.
“Now more Chicagoans will have access to expanded services thanks to our newly renovated first floor,” said HSI President and CEO Donald J. Dew.
Named in honor of HSI’s first Executive Director, the Larry T. Byrd Administrative Building has served as HSI headquarters since its founding in 1978. It has long been a cornerstone of support for West Side residents, offering essential services such as mental and behavioral healthcare, housing assistance, employment programs, crisis intervention, disability services, substance use counseling, special education support, and youth programs.
Beyond the main facility, HSI has grown to operate 16 locations, extending its impact across Chicago’s South and West Sides.
Modernized Facilities for Enhanced Services
The extensive renovations include the addition of an Integrated Employment Center, a Mindfulness, Occupational & Physical Therapy Center, a First Aid Room, an accessible lift, and state-of-the-art Technology Lab. Additional improvements feature a redesigned front entrance and lobby, enhanced lighting, and upgraded flooring to create a welcoming and functional environment.
“The renovated facility is not only aesthetically beautiful but also allows HSI to expand our vital programming,” Dew added.
Legislative and Community Support
The renovation was made possible through the support of key legislators and community partners. Congressman Danny K. Davis (IL-7th District) secured a $500,000 congressional earmark from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), while State Senator Lakesia Collins (5th District) secured $400,000 in state funding. Additionally, Republic Services and Rebuilding Together contributed $250,000 toward the project.
ProvenIT generously contributed $100,000 to the establishment of a state-of-the-art Technology Lab. This lab, designed to accommodate 14 users, will significantly expand access to digital resources. It will also offer opportunities for online training, as well as app and game coding specifically tailored for students. Additionally, the lab will serve clients seeking video instruction, assistance with job searches, and resume development.
Supporter Recognition
During the ceremony, Dew honored key supporters for their ongoing dedication to the communities served by HSI. Awards were presented to Congressman Danny Davis, Senator Lakesia Collins, and Senate Majority Leader Kimberly Lightford, (4th District) who was acknowledged although she was unable to attend. Representatives from HSI partner organizations were also present to accept awards on behalf of their groups. Emmanuel Agbarah received the award for ProvenIT, Deon Mitchell accepted on behalf of Republic Services of Chicago, and Chad Ruckauf accepted the award for Rebuilding Together Metro Chicago.
Future Expansion and Historic Recognition
Looking ahead, Dew is actively seeking funding to continue renovations that will further enhance HSI’s integrated employment services. Plans are also in motion to develop permanent supportive housing for female veterans.
Additionally, HSI is pursuing historic landmark status for its main facility. Originally owned by Belden Manufacturing in the early 1900s, the building holds historical significance as the former site of a company that worked directly with Thomas Edison and has since grown into a multi-billion-dollar international enterprise.
