Donald Dew, CEO of HSI, spoke to the 56th Annual Conference of National Association of Black Social Workers (NABSW), in New Orleans, on strategies for equity, sustainability and legacy in behavioral health.
Mr. Dew introduced for the first time publicly a new nomenclature to describe what has existed for more than a century: the Historically Black Community-Based Organizations (HBCBOs).
“HBCBOs have been around forever and have really done the heavy lifting in terms of providing services to our community,” said Mr. Dew. “But we’ve never really thought of ourselves as a collective, as a group of organizations that share a common heritage that continues to this day. So, under the HBCBO umbrella, we bring a common to this wonderful affiliation we all share.
To this, Mr. Dew displayed a designed badge icon of the HBCBO umbrella and asked people to join a list for future communications and collaborations. The sign-up sheet is available at: HBCBO (historicallyblackcbo.org)
The main part of Mr. Dew’s talk was focused on understanding the importance of Black Servant Leadership in social welfare. He provided insight relative to the strategic challenges and opportunities Black leaders face in HBCBOs. This included succession management, developing frameworks for organization and leadership analysis, and strategies for mentoring and cultivating talent within HBCBOs.
